Three out of every five children grow up struggling to read. They fall behind in school making them more likely to drop out of high school, hold a low paying job, and live below the poverty line. Kids Soar provides an after-school literacy program so that children can excel and they can break the cycle of poverty in their families and in our community. Reading gives children the chance for a better future. You can give a child the gift of reading.
Kids Soar opened over 30 years ago as a safe place for children in the neighborhood to come to one afternoon a week and to receive a hot meal.
Fast forward 30 years and we are now a holistic, multi-generational program. Our children’s after-school literacy program runs 5 days a week. We serve children at two different sites. Our Mountain site is located at Trinity United Methodist Church in Downtown Roanoke and our Lincoln site is located at the Villages at Lincoln Community Center.
Currently, due to COVID restrictions, we are serving 30 children at each of our locations. However, without COVID restrictions, our Mountain site will be able to serve up to 84 students and our Lincoln site will be able to serve up to 75 students. Since we serve the entire family through our youth program, parent classes and family night, we serve up to 370 individuals at our Mountain location and 325 individuals at our Lincoln location.
